Taking the Peace Agenda to the Global Stage In recognition of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s remarkable achievements in promoting peace initiatives, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, President of the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly, invited His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, to speak at the UN General Assembly High-Level Forum on the Culture of Peace.
This forum took place on September 13, 2019, during the 25th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace.
The theme for the celebration was “The Culture of Peace: Empowering and Transforming Humanity.” Otumfuo was asked to discuss the topic “Partnership for a Culture of Peace: Mobilizing Traditional Leadership and Communities for Peace and Security.”

The invitation also requested him to speak about the “Dagbon Peace Accord” and the “Kumasi Declaration.” This invitation and subsequent address by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on Friday, September 13, 2019, marked a historic moment, as he became the first non-Head of State African Traditional Leader to be invited to address this esteemed forum.
