The legacy

Otumfuo Forges a New Legacy for KNUST

As Chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II holds a primarily ceremonial role—presiding over convocations and chairing meetings of the University Council when in attendance. Yet, far from limiting himself to formalities, Otumfuo has redefined the very purpose of this position, infusing it with strategic leadership, personal dedication, and a deep sense of responsibility toward advancing education in Ghana.

By his own admission, since ascending the Golden Stool, he has “devoted more time, effort, and resources than any single entity” to the university’s development, positioning KNUST as a pivotal institution of academic excellence and national growth.

Conflict Mediation: Fostering Stability

Otumfuo has frequently stepped in to mediate disputes between university authorities and students, preventing potential disruptions to the academic calendar. His interventions, often conducted at Manhyia—the official Asantehene residence—have been instrumental in resolving tensions, restoring dialogue, and ensuring the smooth functioning of the university.

Bridging Government Relations

Serving as a vital bridge between the university and successive Ghanaian governments, Otumfuo has played a key role in easing tensions during critical periods. A notable example occurred in 2018 when student disturbances led to a temporary campus closure. Leveraging his moral authority, Otumfuo facilitated reconciliation, enabling the swift resumption of academic activities and restoring administrative stability.

Championing Programme Diversification

Otumfuo’s personal endorsement and advocacy were pivotal in expanding KNUST’s academic portfolio. His support was instrumental in the successful launch of the university’s Business School and LLM programmes—initiatives that have broadened academic horizons and addressed emerging educational demands in Ghana.

Strategic Industry Collaboration

A landmark achievement under Otumfuo’s tenure was the acquisition of AngloGold Ashanti’s training centre and related facilities in Obuasi, which became the foundation for the KNUST Obuasi Campus. His direct involvement ensured that KNUST secured this opportunity over competing bids, strengthening the university’s capacity for specialized education and research.

International Outreach and Partnerships

Otumfuo has significantly elevated KNUST’s global standing by hosting foreign dignitaries and including university leaders in his diplomatic delegations. His efforts have fostered international partnerships and strategic collaborations, such as the Government of Seychelles’ plan to establish a Technology Park at KNUST’s Kumasi Campus—designed to promote the commercialisation of student innovations and research projects.

Protecting Land Assets for Future Growth

Amid rising population pressure in the 19 communities surrounding KNUST, Otumfuo has personally intervened to protect the university’s undeveloped lands from encroachment. His mediation resolved a notable land dispute, clearing the way for construction of the KNUST Teaching Hospital and the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences. These efforts have not only safeguarded the university’s expansion but fostered harmonious relations with neighboring communities.

Enduring Recognition

In acknowledgement of his exceptional contributions, the KNUST University Council issued a special citation during the celebration of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s 15th anniversary as Asantehene in 2014—a testament to the deep appreciation and respect from the academic community.
