Background

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene is a globally revered traditional leader . Since his enthronement in 1999, his influence has extended far beyond Ghana. He has not only preserved the rich cultural heritage of Ashanti—one of Africa’s most powerful pre-colonial kingdoms—but has also played a significant role in modern governance, peacebuilding, and international diplomacy. His incredible role in peacebuilding and conflict resolution in Ghana has earned him the accolade “King Solomon.”

Otumfuo has dedicated time and resources to resolving numerous chieftaincy disputes within his traditional domain and other parts of Ghana. Notably, he played a crucial role in addressing the long-standing and violent Dagbon chieftaincy dispute in northern Ghana.
Currently, Otumfuo is serving as the sole mediator in a serious chieftaincy conflict in Bawku, in the Upper East Region of Ghana. He is working tirelessly to restore peace in this area, and there is a general consensus among Ghanaians that the wisdom and strategies he employed to achieve peace in Dagbon will manifest itself again in Bawku.

Besides, he has played a key role in mediating political conflicts, including election disputes and political transitions. In the lead-up to the 2012 general elections, the Asantehene convened all presidential candidates to sign a peace agreement in Kumasi, known as the Kumasi Declaration. Also when tensions boiled in 2016 and the UN representative and the rest of the diplomatic community expressed deep concern, the Asantehene facilitated a quiet diplomatic resolution that led to a peaceful transition.

His global influence and diplomatic efforts have been remarkable. The Asantehene has addressed international forums, including the United Nations, on issues of peace, tradition, and development, serving as a bridge between Africa’s past and future.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has assisted Ghanaian leaders in obtaining support from international bodies like the IMF and World Bank to tackle economic challenges.

The Asantehene has not only spoken strongly about the destructive effects of illegal mining (galamsey) on the environment, but has also consistently championed responsible mining.

Through the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation, the King has promoted initiatives in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. To date, hundreds of thousands of scholarships have been awarded to underprivileged students in Ghana.

In recognition of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s outstanding contributions to promoting peace and good governance in Ghana, the Bank of Ghana gave approval to E ON 3 Group to mint 24-karat gold coin and commemorative medals in his honour.

Clearly, the reign of the 16th occupant of the Golden Stool has contributed immensely in advancing peace and development of Ghana while promoting continental and global unity.
